I just got an idea for a new app tonight. It doesn't have a name yet, and it's not done yet... but I made good progress on night #1.

Here is the idea....

For cross country or road races without chips, usually you have a chute and tear-off tabs on the bib #. You have someone at the back of the chute tearing them off and putting them on the spindle. Then after the race, you bring the spindle(s) over to the computer and someone scans the barcodes or manually types them in.

This is a pain because it takes a while to enter all of the numbers for a large race... and also we've all seen reversed or dropped or lost spindles causing all sort of problems. I have seem some people using a backup system of someone with a clip board, paper, and pen manually writing down all the bibs beside the person with the spindle.

What I want to suggest is reversing this... and replacing the clipboard with a tablet or a phone or other device. So then you still do the spindle.... but the spindle becomes the backup and the tablet/phone become the primary.

Either live as you enter or as soon as the race is over... or maybe whenever you change chutes or spindles, you submit the bibs to RaceTab. It will push them right in.... or you can email the bibs... or copy and paste or save to a file or maybe to the cloud (not sure all yet).

You can also use this app in offline mode... so if you connect to RaceTab you'd select the race and be able to push right into it. But if you work if offline mode, you can collect the bibs and then either email it, download via USB or some other way to transfer it to the computer and import it into RaceTab... either way.

This app is NOT done yet... and it only works in offline mode right now... that's all I have done so far. But it won't take too much to finish it.

The apps work on your computer or in Chrome on Android right now. i'm not sure what the hell is wrong with Safari.

Let me know what you think and what name you think.... half comedically I suggest

Bibinator, Bibify, Bibulator, Bib Baby

ahhh it's 3am i'm too tired to think of a good name

So I like this of course ... another option.  However what I also like is to be able to type into a real copy of racetab (which we do now with a ten key) but have it in "bib" mode and have it record the time I enter the bib numbers which would then give us cross check times for each entered bib allowing us to correct a slipped time issue.  I like this idea a lot.

Excellent idea!

How about connecting via Bluetooth? Most new(er) laptops come with Bluetooth  You could have the phone/tablet push the bib numbers to racetab live. Or...WiFi instead of Bluetooth.

How about Bib-le?

There is an app called Bib Logger that you may want to take a look at.

Ok, no idea in general other than quite a comedy routine you all got going!!  Anyway, so basically you would type in bib numbers as they finish and there will be a way to import from the device immediately into RACETAB even if it is not on a network?  This would be way cool.  Plus in distance runs in track not seeded so no idea of lanes for hip numbers would it possibly work to put in bibs as they finish?  Eagle Eye lets you set up an evt file just by 'lanes'.  So, lane 1 would really be first place, etc.  this would make FAT in unseeded distance races a dream!!

This is working great now on Android. All the other apps are working great on Android also.

On Apple... I'm having issues. This new one works in offline mode, but I can't get it to talk to RaceTab. Seems like Apple has some restrictions built in about communicating with a local server or something... I don't know... still gotta figure it out. Apple sucks.
